Forrester Trends: ‘Global VNOs are in your future’
Brownlee Thomas
The two top reasons for buying managed international telecommunications services are: 1) to
achieve overall cost savings, and 2) to simplify operations. This plays well into VNOs’ value
messaging, which underscores these specialists’ ability to offer new metrics and tools to help
enterprise customers estimate their return on investment (ROI) and calculate the lower TCO delivered as a result of buying their managed services.
If you think the changes in the global telecommunications services landscape are over, think
again: VNOs will be an important catalyst in transforming the marketplace. They’re putting
innovation and competition pressures on the large operators.
Forrester Trends: ‘Sourcing global telecoms is fraught with risk'
Brownlee Thomas (2005)
Global firms whose business depends increasingly on telecommunications should consider
alternative sourcing models for global networking and international telecom services. The
global telecommunications segment is undergoing a transformation that will take at least five
years, and possibly as many as 10 to complete. This will result in a period of prolonged instability
and uncertainty during which sourcing global telecommunications will be fraught with risk. To
reduce risk exposure, MNCs should adopt alternative and flexible sourcing strategies. Models
worth considering include regional sourcing, tiered sourcing, and using alternative global service
providers like VNOs and network integrators.
